Inspiration

I am certainly not the first artist to be drawn to the egg as an image or metaphor. Throughout the history of art, the egg has carried associations with life, birth, renewal, and fragility. Its simplicity makes it an especially powerful symbol for the vulnerability of life.

Portable Prayer is a series of objects and spaces designed for standing, kneeling, sitting, lying prostrate, and praying. The work speaks to the omnipresence of prayer and of God—to a relationship that can hold joy, pain, whimsy, longing, and intensity all at once.

I have often described the aesthetic as “twenty-third century medieval.” That contradiction is intentional. The work draws from historical forms associated with devotion, ritual, and sacred space, while reimagining them through a contemporary lens. The resulting tension allows the pieces to feel both familiar and displaced from any particular time.

The series is also a collaboration between my brother Robert and me. It represents a synthesis of our visual ideas and a process that continually challenges the way each of us approaches making.

The work is not mine or his, but ours. In negotiating those differences, we have found the collaboration to be uniquely rich. That struggle toward plurality allows the work to move beyond either individual voice and, we hope, speak more universally.
