About Shawn Adair

Shawn Adair is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, mixed media, photography, video, and digital imagery. His work explores memory, family, faith, vulnerability, loss, and the ways personal experience shapes identity.

Much of Adair’s practice begins with ordinary objects, familiar spaces, and autobiographical experiences. Through construction, fragmentation, repetition, and visual symbolism, these materials are transformed into works that examine the tension between strength and fragility, permanence and impermanence, intimacy and distance.

Adair holds an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Arkansas and a BA in Studio Art from Oral Roberts University. His work has been recognized through an Arkansas Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship and recognition from the International Sculpture Center. In addition to exhibiting his artwork, he has worked in education, video production, photography, and other creative disciplines.

Rather than remaining within a single medium, Adair approaches each project according to what the idea requires. A work may become a sculpture, photograph, moving image, book, drawing, or installation. Across these different forms, the underlying concerns remain consistent: how people remember, how relationships shape us, how belief affects experience, and how meaning can emerge from seemingly ordinary moments.

His recent work continues to examine autobiography and personal history, often using imagery drawn from family relationships, childhood experiences, aging, landscape, and memory.

Adair lives and works in Arkansas.

Artist Statement

I once heard David Lynch describe ideas as if they were simply out there—floating around until one happens to find you. I have always appreciated the humility in that idea. The origins of creative thought can be mysterious, and I am not particularly interested in pretending otherwise.

For me, ideas most often emerge from relationships: with God, family, friends, memory, place, and the people whose lives intersect with my own. These spiritual, physical, and emotional connections become the starting points for the images and objects I make.

I think of the work as portraits, letters, prayers, and reflections. Through it, I try to understand my own experiences while exploring broader questions of identity, vulnerability, connection, and the human condition.

Making art allows me to give form to things that are often difficult to explain directly. It becomes a way of thinking, remembering, questioning, and telling a story—one that begins personally but, I hope, leaves room for others to recognize something of their own experience within it.

"Art gives me a way to process faith, loss, family, and the raw fragile beauty of being human."
