Inspiration
I am certainly not the first artist to be drawn to the egg as an image or metaphor. Throughout the history of art, the egg has carried associations with life, birth, renewal, and fragility. Its simplicity makes it an especially powerful symbol for the vulnerability of life.
Blue Fragile is my small contribution to that long visual conversation.
The blue egg is juxtaposed with structural forms taken from earlier sculpture and from old steel paintings by my brother, Robert Adair. Left outdoors to rust and age, these elements bring weight, deterioration, and permanence into contrast with the delicacy of the egg. The resulting tension between strength and fragility is central to the work.
Like Family Virtues, Blue Fragile was created entirely on my iPhone.
